During a recent meeting of the Park and Recreation Board, significant discussions centered around the city's capital projects and the development of an Urban Forest Master Plan aimed at enhancing Burbank's green spaces and ensuring equitable access to tree benefits for all residents.

Grace Coronado, the assistant director of park recreation and community services, provided an update on the Urban Forest Master Plan. She noted that Burbank has been recognized as a Tree City USA for over 47 years, underscoring the city's commitment to preserving its urban forest. The department has successfully increased the number of public trees from 32,077 in 2008 to over 33,000 today, contributing significant environmental benefits, including stormwater reduction and energy savings.

Coronado outlined the plan's objectives, which include creating a comprehensive urban forest master plan and conducting an urban canopy study focused on underserved communities. The city has allocated $1.2 million in the fiscal year 2024-2025 budget for this initiative, which will involve updating the current tree inventory, assessing tree health, and engaging the community for input.

The timeline for the Urban Forest Master Plan includes a tree inventory phase starting in October 2024, followed by data analysis and community outreach, with the final plan expected to be implemented by April 2026. This initiative aims to promote sustainable management of Burbank's urban forest, reinforcing the value of trees as essential community assets and enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
