Kern County's Department of Services has officially launched its 37th annual Holiday Cottage program, aimed at bringing joy to local foster children during the holiday season. The initiative kicked off with a grand opening event and press conference, highlighting the importance of supporting children who may not be in their homes during this festive time.
The Holiday Cottage allows foster children to express their wishes for gifts, which the program then works to fulfill through community support. Each year, the program receives requests from over 700 children in foster care, making it a vital resource for those in need. The emotional impact of the initiative was emphasized, with organizers noting the heartwarming smiles of children receiving their desired gifts.
Community members can participate in the program by visiting the Holiday Cottage located at 3043 Wilson Road, open weekdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, or by selecting a child's wish online at kernholidaycottage.com. Monetary donations are also welcomed to help support the initiative.
In addition to the Holiday Cottage, discussions during the recent board meeting highlighted the ongoing need for awareness about the challenges faced by children in foster care, particularly teens, sibling groups, and those with special needs. The campaign aims to educate the public about the thousands of children in need of loving families and permanent homes, reinforcing the spirit of giving during the holiday season.
