During a recent government meeting, Jennifer Willoughby, the Director of Early Childhood Family Engagement, provided an update on initiatives surrounding Indigenous Peoples' Day and the upcoming Native American Heritage Month.
Willoughby highlighted the successful observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 14, where instructional staff received resources to educate students about the significance of the day, including stories and legends. Feedback from educators indicated that these materials were effectively utilized in classrooms, fostering student engagement. Notably, a student teacher dressed in traditional regalia led a dance session that captivated students, showcasing the district's commitment to cultural education.
Looking ahead, Willoughby announced plans for Native American Heritage Month in November, which will feature a district-wide \"Native Spirit Week\" from November 11 to 15. Each day of the week will have a specific theme encouraging students and staff to dress in colors representing various aspects of Indigenous culture and history. Activities include a fry bread family night, where community members can learn about traditional cooking and participate in cultural demonstrations.
Additionally, the district has appointed a new family engagement coordinator, Rebecca Sherf, who will focus on supporting Indigenous families and enhancing community involvement in educational activities. This position, which has been challenging to fill, will be funded through title grants and will work in collaboration with existing family engagement coordinators.
These initiatives reflect the district's ongoing efforts to promote cultural awareness and inclusivity within the educational environment, ensuring that Indigenous heritage is recognized and celebrated throughout the school year.
