During a recent Estacada School District board meeting, significant discussions centered on student behavior, academic performance, and facility capacity challenges.
The meeting highlighted a concerning trend of physical incidents involving students, particularly in elementary and middle schools. Reports indicated that the majority of these incidents occurred in kindergarten and first grade, often involving new students who may not yet have established communication skills. The district has implemented training for staff to better de-escalate situations and manage behavior, which has shown positive results.
In response to poor academic performance and high behavioral issues at Estequeta Middle School, the district has made substantial changes to the school schedule. The new schedule aims to reduce student fatigue by aligning middle school hours with those of elementary schools, thereby decreasing the overall time students spend in class. This adjustment is intended to enhance learning outcomes and reduce behavioral problems, particularly in subjects like mathematics, which were previously scheduled during students' least attentive periods.
The board also addressed the pressing issue of overcapacity in several schools, particularly in physical education classes. With state mandates requiring daily PE for students in grades K-8, the middle school is struggling to accommodate nearly 500 students in a single gymnasium. The superintendent proposed the creation of a weight room to alleviate some of this pressure, as the demand for weightlifting classes at the high school has surged.
Additionally, the district is exploring the potential acquisition of the Redbarn Co-Op property, which could serve as a valuable asset for educational programs, including a permanent home for the adult transitions program that supports students with complex needs.
The board's discussions reflect a commitment to addressing both immediate challenges and long-term strategic planning to enhance educational experiences and facilities for students in the Estacada School District.
