In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the progress made in establishing dementia-friendly initiatives in DuPage County, emphasizing their pride in being the first in the area and the ninth in the state to adopt such programs. Over the past five years, the community has seen the emergence of 40 dementia-friendly communities statewide, yet only two exist within DuPage County, underscoring the need for continued efforts in this area.
The meeting provided updates on ongoing programs at the Westmont Library, which have been running since August 2019. Monthly educational sessions have attracted a growing audience, with recent events drawing a total of 40 attendees, approximately 45% of whom were new participants. This indicates a rising awareness and interest in dementia-related issues within the community.
Additionally, the establishment of a memory café just a year ago has proven successful, currently serving 18 participants with a waiting list, showcasing the demand for supportive environments for individuals affected by dementia. The community's commitment is further reflected in the involvement of volunteers from the senior resource group, which collaborates with local organizations to enhance support services.
The meeting concluded with a call for continued community engagement and collaboration to expand these vital programs, ensuring that DuPage County remains a leader in dementia awareness and support.
