In a recent government meeting, the council approved a resolution to finalize a labor contract with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1215, covering the period from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025. The agreement includes a cost of living wage adjustment of 3% for 2024, along with an additional 3.5% market adjustment, and a further 3% cost of living adjustment with a 1% market adjustment for 2025.
Key provisions of the contract also include enhanced benefits for firefighters. Notably, there will be an increase in clothing and equipment allowances by $50 in both 2024 and 2025, as well as improvements to severance pay related to sick leave. Employees with less than ten years of service will receive 25% of their accumulated sick leave upon termination, while new hires will start with 143 hours of sick leave. Additionally, during their first six months, new employees will not accrue further sick leave.
The agreement also introduces paid parental leave in accordance with city policy, and employees will receive 312 hours of holiday leave annually, with the option to sell back up to 120 hours of holiday time each year. Furthermore, firefighters will be compensated $40 per month for communication expenses related to job duties on personal devices.
Council members expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of both the firefighters' representatives and city management during the negotiation process. Council member Trautman highlighted the increased demands on firefighters, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, emphasizing the community's appreciation for their service. The resolution was moved and seconded, paving the way for the city manager to execute the agreement.
