The department successfully hired three new firefighters—Rodriguez, Baird, and Olson—bringing the total to nine firefighters per shift. This increase is aimed at ensuring adequate coverage during extended military leaves. Additionally, the department has established intern positions for captain and lieutenant roles and filled the captain vacancy left by Ewald during his year-long deployment.

The fire department also completed a strategic plan and standard operating procedures, codifying its mission, vision, and values. Notably, the department recorded a record number of calls in 2023, totaling 4,989, with less than 10% involving actual fires. The trend is expected to continue, with projections indicating over 5,000 calls in 2024.

The Transportation Commission also provided updates, highlighting its recommendation to advance the Nicollet Avenue reconstruction project. The commission has met seven times this year and welcomed five new members, enhancing discussions on various agenda items. They hosted two open houses for the Nicollet Avenue project and engaged in discussions about safe routes to school projects at local elementary schools.

The commission has been proactive in collaborating with county staff and has received presentations from MnDOT regarding ongoing construction projects, including the I-494 construction. Looking ahead, the commission plans to address future transportation initiatives, including the Penn Avenue reconstruction and other city-wide transportation matters.
