Highlighting significant projects completed in 2024, Gassenmeyer noted the successful upgrades to stormwater systems, including the Field Street pipe rerouting into Keiser Creek and enhancements to the Merrifield pump station. The new high tide alert system, which notifies officials via text and email when the pump station is activated, was also emphasized as a key technological advancement.
The DPW reported over 100 repaired and cleaned basins throughout the city, alongside the installation of updated flood sirens on Shawnee Avenue. The department has also expanded its fleet with the addition of a new dump truck and a hot box for asphalt, enhancing its operational capabilities.
A notable initiative launched in May 2024, the pothole reporter, has already received over 170 reports from citizens, demonstrating community engagement in infrastructure maintenance. Additionally, the DPW has completed over 30 FEMA disaster projects related to levee and creek maintenance, underscoring its commitment to public safety.
Gassenmeyer also addressed ongoing improvements in street signage and crosswalk maintenance, with a focus on enhancing safety around schools. Since August, the department has completed 186 crosswalks, prioritizing areas near educational institutions. The DPW has contracted with Max Signs to improve street sign visibility, with significant progress reported in West Scranton and ongoing efforts in other city areas.
Looking ahead, Gassenmeyer confirmed that street paving for 2025 will be fully funded through the capital budget, with plans already in place for the upcoming season. The department is also working on a diesel management system and a generator installation for the DPW headquarters, further enhancing operational efficiency.
