In a heartfelt tribute during a recent government meeting, a father recounted the heroic actions of his son, Marine Sergeant John Rankel, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan on June 7, 2010. The father shared how John, initially reassigned to a naval deployment, actively sought to join a unit heading to Afghanistan, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to serve.

John's determination to earn the respect of his new unit was evident as he worked diligently, receiving commendations from commanding officers. On the day of his death, he led two squads on patrol when one squad came under heavy fire. In a remarkable act of bravery, John ran 600 yards to provide support, ultimately ordering his men to retreat while he stayed behind to cover their escape. Tragically, he was shot during this selfless act and fought for over an hour before succumbing to his wounds.

For his valor, John was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with a valor device.
