In a special meeting held by the Sierra Madre City Council, members addressed community concerns regarding utility infrastructure and discussed the agenda for the evening, which included a presentation on the police department's organizational assessment plan.
The meeting commenced with a roll call confirming the presence of all council members, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Council member Christine Lowe. During the meeting, a public comment was made by resident Mark Fleming, who raised significant concerns about the installation of a new composite utility pole on his property. Fleming explained that he and his partner were initially informed by Southern California Edison that the replacement of their wooden utility pole was due to damage and age. However, they later learned that the replacement was also linked to an upgrade in power distribution lines, which would increase voltage from 4,000 to 16,000 volts.
Fleming expressed frustration over the lack of transparency from Edison regarding the reasons for the pole replacement and highlighted safety concerns, noting that the new pole is installed less than four feet from their home, violating California's minimum distance regulations. He urged the council to assist in addressing these issues, particularly regarding potential impacts on property value and health.
Following the public comment, the council moved to approve the meeting agenda, which included a discussion on the police department's organizational assessment plan, led by Chief Barrientos. The council's willingness to engage with community concerns reflects a commitment to transparency and responsiveness in local governance.
