After careful deliberation, the LTAC recommended 23 awards amounting to $307,800. Notably, the Visitor Information Center (VIC) was allocated $30,000, despite earlier community concerns about a lack of funding. The committee emphasized the importance of the VIC, which serves as a vital resource for visitors and is run by dedicated volunteers.
The meeting highlighted the difficult decisions made by the LTAC, particularly regarding funding for popular events. The Fourth of July fireworks show received full funding of $15,000, reflecting its anticipated high attendance, while Race Week, a for-profit event, was denied funding due to its profitability and the committee's focus on events that generate overnight stays for tourists.
The committee also discussed the need for creative solutions to fund various community initiatives, including the Chamber of Commerce's marketing program, which received $125,000 of the requested $183,000. The Chamber's request for additional funding for spring and fall festivals was acknowledged, with the committee expressing a willingness to consider these applications once submitted.
As the city moves forward with plans for the new event center, expected to open by late 2026, council members reiterated the importance of balancing immediate funding needs with long-term community benefits.
