In a recent government meeting, key stakeholders in the housing sector discussed collaborative efforts to address affordable housing challenges in Council Bluffs and surrounding areas. Kim, a representative from Habitat for Humanity, emphasized the importance of the ReStore, which relies on donations from construction projects and other sources to fund housing initiatives. The proceeds from the ReStore are reinvested into building more homes, highlighting a sustainable model for community development.
The conversation also touched on the formation of a new housing consortium, which includes Habitat, NeighborWorks, and other local organizations. This consortium aims to streamline resources and foster open dialogue among partners to enhance affordable housing efforts. David Hayswood, CEO of NeighborWorks, outlined his organization’s commitment to creating affordable homeownership opportunities through both single-family and multifamily developments. He reported significant investments in the local market, including a projected 18 single-family developments in the upcoming fiscal year.
Hayswood also detailed plans for constructing three bungalows in a blighted neighborhood, targeting a sales price of approximately $155,000. The initiative aims to assist buyers earning around 80% of the area’s median income, with additional funding sought for down payment assistance. The meeting underscored a collective commitment to tackling housing issues through collaboration and innovative funding strategies, as stakeholders work together to improve the housing landscape in the region.
