During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on a proposed development project by Harter's Lakeside Disposal, which seeks to establish a solid waste disposal collection and transportation operation in Germantown. The project involves rezoning a 12.7-acre site from M1 (limited industrial) to M2 (general industrial) and obtaining a conditional use permit for the operation.
Community Development Director Jeff Retzwah outlined the proposal, which is planned to unfold in three phases over a period of three to five years. The initial phase includes minimal site development with a gravel storage area for trucks and dumpsters, while subsequent phases will expand the facility to include a maintenance building and additional storage capacity.
Concerns raised by local residents during a previous public hearing included the impact on traffic along Rockfield Road, aesthetics of the development, and potential health implications due to the proximity of a solar farm. Residents expressed worries about the effect on the local school and surrounding neighborhoods.
Despite the proposal's intent to create jobs and enhance local business, staff recommendations indicated that the property is better suited for commercial and less intense industrial use, suggesting a denial of both the rezoning request and the conditional use permit application. The Plan Commission is expected to deliberate further on the matter, with the possibility for public input during future meetings.
Harter's representatives emphasized that their operation would not involve waste transfer activities, but rather focus on the maintenance and storage of empty trucks and dumpsters. They argued that their use could fit within the existing M1 zoning, as it aligns with the character of other businesses in the area.
The meeting concluded with a motion to postpone the decision until the next gathering, allowing for further discussion and community feedback.
