During a recent city council meeting in Molalla, key discussions centered around the future of the Fox Park and Molalla Public Library properties, which are currently leased from the Molalla River School District. The lease, established in 1998, is set to expire in March 2025, and the city has invested over $3 million in improvements to these facilities. However, negotiations for purchasing the properties have stalled following a breakdown in discussions with the school district earlier this year.
City officials expressed concern that the school district may force the community to vacate these important local resources. The council emphasized the significance of both the park and library to the community, citing their long-standing use and support from local partners. To address these concerns, the council plans to hold public meetings to discuss the issue further.
In addition to property discussions, the council appointed Judy Laux to the Molalla Public Library Board of Directors. Laux, a long-time resident and volunteer, expressed her passion for the library and her desire to contribute to its future.
Public comments were also a part of the meeting, with residents given the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions. One resident, Peggy Smith, thanked the council for recent street repairs and requested additional help with traffic safety measures in her neighborhood.
The meeting highlighted the council's commitment to community engagement and the ongoing challenges related to local property management and public resources.
