During a recent government meeting, the council unanimously approved a motion to implement body cameras for local law enforcement, with the vote passing 5-0. Councilor Holden initiated the motion, which was seconded by Councilor Wagner, indicating strong support for the initiative aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability within the police department.
In addition to the body camera discussion, the council reviewed a request from Andrea Pastor of Rainy Lake Medical Center to co-sponsor the upcoming \"Home for the Holidays\" event, marking its 30th anniversary. Scheduled for Black Friday, November 29th, the festivities will commence at Smokey Bear Park at 4 PM, featuring food trucks, free hot chocolate, cookies, and Christmas light displays. This year’s event will introduce alpacas in place of reindeer, adding a unique twist to the holiday celebration.
The parade will kick off at 6 PM, following the same route as previous years, starting at Eighth Avenue and concluding at Third Avenue Highway 53. Adjustments to the location of judges and emcees were discussed, with a potential move to the north side of the street to mitigate wind issues. The event will conclude with a fireworks display, funded by a $5,000 allocation, with safety measures in place to ensure a secure viewing experience.
Pastor confirmed that road closures will begin at 3 PM in front of Smokey Bear Park, with full closures implemented by 5 PM to facilitate the event. The council expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming holiday festivities, highlighting the community spirit and engagement fostered by such events.
