In a recent government meeting, the focus was on the ongoing efforts to address the childcare needs within the community, particularly in light of the identified daycare desert. Natalie Whisler, the director of the care team, has been instrumental in expanding services, successfully opening a new care site at Verne Duncan with 95 slots and adding 20 slots at Linwood. Currently, there are 680 elementary students enrolled in before and after school care, although a waitlist of 155 remains, down from 171 last year.
The meeting highlighted a significant increase in scholarship fund requests, which have risen by approximately 30%. This trend raises concerns about balancing costs and community needs moving forward. In addition to elementary care, after school programs are being implemented across all four middle schools, with a total of 400 students served at Lott Whitcomb Elementary through the 21st Century Community Learning Grant.
Staffing updates were also discussed, revealing that as of September 10th, 216 licensed staff and 158 classified staff have been hired or transferred internally. The introduction of 14 new administrators was noted, alongside a discussion of current vacancies, which are partly attributed to program expansions. Overall, the district is reportedly in a strong position compared to previous years, thanks to the efforts of the human resources department.
