Enrollment figures for the current academic year show a notable increase across various school levels, according to a recent government meeting. As of September 9th, the district reported a total of 17,190 students enrolled, although this number is expected to change as the year progresses and adjustments are made for students who may withdraw.
Elementary schools have seen a decline of over 100 students, with first grade alone down approximately 135 students. This decrease was anticipated due to a demographic shift, as the district prepares for a \"bubble\" of students moving into middle school. In contrast, middle schools have experienced an increase of 115 students, with sixth grade enrollment up by 140. High schools reported the most significant growth, with an increase of 450 students, including a rise of 270 in the 12th grade. Charter schools have remained stable, with an increase of about 30 students.
To address class size concerns, the district has added five full-time equivalent (FTE) positions at the elementary level and two at Nelson Elementary. Further staffing adjustments are being considered to ensure adequate support for students.
In addition to enrollment updates, the district is enhancing its preschool offerings, hosting 10 Head Start classrooms this year. The Oak Grove preschool program is now at full capacity with a waiting list, and the Savin Schellenberg Preschool has transitioned to a full-time, full-day program. The district also introduced an online welcome event for kindergarten families, which attracted over 100 participants, marking a successful initiative to engage new families.
Further updates on enrollment and class sizes are expected in October, as the district continues to monitor and adapt to the changing educational landscape.
