In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the successful implementation of a broadband project in Gage County, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The initiative, which aimed to enhance internet connectivity in rural areas, has reportedly transformed the local landscape by delivering next-generation fiber optic broadband to nearly 1,000 locations.

The project, led by NextLINK, a Texas-based internet service provider, was initiated after a request for proposals (RFP) attracted three bidders. After careful evaluation, NextLINK was selected for its commitment to not only meet but exceed the initial project scope. Originally estimated at $4 million, the project has seen costs rise to approximately $13 million due to increased material and labor expenses, yet it remains on track for completion.

Aaron Clark, NextLINK's regional director of operations, highlighted that the company has already connected 983 homes and is working on additional phases that will ultimately serve over 1,080 residences. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as many other broadband projects in Nebraska have struggled to meet deadlines and serve fewer locations.

The partnership between Gage County and NextLINK has been praised for its effectiveness, with local officials noting the importance of public-private collaboration in expanding broadband access. The project not only enhances connectivity for residents but also supports local businesses and healthcare services, allowing for remote consultations and online operations.
