In a recent government meeting, officials from Home City Development presented two significant housing redevelopment projects aimed at revitalizing the Old Hill and Upper Hill neighborhoods. The meeting, led by Tom Kegelman, executive director of Home City Development, outlined plans involving the transfer of 14 parcels to facilitate the construction of affordable housing.
The first project, managed by Home City Development, will see the development of 10 new homes on 11 parcels, with a focus on affordability for households earning 80% to 100% of the area median income. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address housing needs in the Mason Square area, particularly around the newly established Swan DeBerry School. The project has garnered substantial funding, including $2 million from Mass Housing, which underscores the state's commitment to supporting local housing initiatives.
The second project, spearheaded by Wayfinders, involves the acquisition of three distressed properties that will be demolished and replaced with new homes. This effort aims to transform long-vacant and blighted homes into viable homeownership opportunities. Wayfinders has also secured funding from the Mass Housing Neighborhood Stabilization Program and private contributions from the Mass Mutual Foundation, further enhancing the project's financial viability.
Both projects have received backing from the Alltel Neighborhood Council, which has actively participated in the review process and provided letters of support to the city council. The collaborative nature of these initiatives highlights a community-driven approach to addressing housing challenges.
