During a recent government meeting, Cameron Schiphol, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors in Southern Arizona, presented the organization's mission and services aimed at supporting the elderly population in Cochise County. Established 30 years ago, the organization has evolved from a meal delivery service into a comprehensive caregiving model that employs seniors to assist their peers.
Schiphol detailed the organization's growth, highlighting its expansion into various services including light housekeeping, transportation, personal care, and companionship. The initiative aims to help seniors maintain independence in their homes while providing meaningful employment opportunities for older adults seeking to supplement their retirement income.
A significant aspect of the program is its focus on peer-to-peer relationships, which fosters companionship and reduces feelings of isolation among seniors. Schiphol shared personal experiences that underscored the importance of having caregivers who can relate to their clients, emphasizing that many caregivers are themselves seniors, often over the age of 50.
The organization is currently working to establish partnerships with local churches and community centers to reach seniors who may not be able to afford their services. Schiphol expressed a desire to collaborate with these institutions to provide additional support and resources for the elderly, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated feelings of loneliness among seniors.
Schiphol also addressed the issue of caregiver burnout, noting that the organization has a retention rate of 82%, significantly higher than the industry average. This success is attributed to the emphasis on creating meaningful connections between caregivers and their clients, which enhances the quality of care provided.
The meeting concluded with a call for community support and referrals, as well as an invitation for local organizations to engage with Seniors Helping Seniors to better serve the needs of the elderly population in the area. The initiative aims to ensure that seniors do not face isolation and have access to the companionship and assistance they require to thrive in their own homes.
