During a recent meeting of the McAllen Independent School District (MISD) Board, significant concerns regarding teacher morale and workload were raised by public speakers, highlighting the challenges faced by educators in the district.
Sylvia Tanguma, representing over 1,000 members of the McAllen American Federation of Teachers (AFT), addressed the board, expressing that many teachers are feeling overwhelmed and at risk of leaving the profession. She emphasized that recent changes in scheduling, such as an adjustment in start times from 7:45 AM to 7:30 AM, have exacerbated stress levels among teachers, particularly those who are also parents managing multiple drop-offs. Tanguma noted that the varying requirements across elementary campuses have left teachers with little time for essential tasks, contributing to burnout.
The board also discussed the McAllen Education Foundation, which supports educational initiatives and has funded over $550,000 in innovative teacher grants since its inception in 1996. The foundation aims to enhance educational opportunities for students and will host its third annual bowling tournament on February 22, 2025, to raise funds for its programs.
The meeting underscored the urgent need for the board to address teacher concerns to improve morale and retention, as well as the ongoing efforts of the McAllen Education Foundation to support educational excellence in the district.
