In a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding water usage and environmental impacts related to the proposed El Agonte Estates development near Monte Verde and Pill Hill communities. Developers presented their plans, emphasizing proactive measures taken to address water issues, including a commitment to use half the water compared to neighboring properties and implementing drought-tolerant landscaping practices.
Dave Wassmiller, a developer involved in the project, highlighted the success of a previous development, Willow Ridge, which faced similar concerns but ultimately thrived. He assured attendees that extensive efforts had been made to engage with the community and mitigate potential water-related issues, including collaboration with county officials on traffic signalization and water management.
However, local residents voiced strong opposition, primarily centered on water supply fears. A Monte Verde community member warned that the addition of 16 new wells could jeopardize the existing water supply for 125 homes reliant on just two wells. Concerns were echoed by Jeremy Banducci from Pill Hill, who reported significant drops in local water levels, necessitating the drilling of new wells in recent years. Banducci criticized the hydrology report supporting the development, arguing it underestimated the water usage that would result from the new homes.
Ken Schmidt, a hydrogeologist, defended the project, asserting that it complied with county regulations and would balance water consumption with recharge efforts. He noted that the area had historically experienced a gradual decline in water levels, but emphasized that the proposed development would implement measures to mitigate further depletion.
The meeting concluded with a call for careful consideration of the risks associated with the development, particularly regarding water sustainability and environmental impacts. The board is expected to deliberate further on the project, weighing the potential benefits against the community's concerns.
