During a recent government meeting, officials approved the fiscal year 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for Clearfield County, which includes projects aimed at addressing significant stormwater and flooding issues in several municipalities.
The meeting highlighted the allocation of $255,702 for Chester Hill Borough, where residents have reported persistent flooding problems. The funds will primarily be used for stormwater management projects, including the reconstruction of roads along Gertrude, Edwards, and Roland Streets. The project aims to improve drainage and reduce floodwaters that have plagued the area during heavy rains.
Clearfield Borough will receive $114,613, with a substantial portion dedicated to mitigating flooding from Locust Street to Temple Avenue. Officials noted that the borough's geography, situated in a valley, exacerbates flooding issues, particularly following recent construction that has negatively impacted drainage systems.
Lawrence Township plans to continue its stormwater drainage improvements, focusing on Bowman Hill, while Woodward Township will invest in enhancing the Houtston Woodward Recreation Park, including the construction of an ADA-accessible restroom facility.
The meeting also addressed the need for a fair housing resolution and compliance with minority and women-owned business goals as part of the CDBG funding requirements. Officials expressed satisfaction with the focus on stormwater management, aligning with the county's comprehensive plan to improve infrastructure and community resilience against flooding.
The commissioners emphasized their commitment to supporting local municipalities in effectively utilizing CDBG funds to enhance community development and address pressing environmental challenges.
