PAWS celebrates 40 years of animal rescue and advocacy

In a recent meeting of the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, significant transitions and recognitions took center stage. Peter, the interim director, announced his upcoming retirement, with Brett Sampson set to take over his role starting November 1st. Sampson, who brings 25 years of experience, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the team and continuing the work initiated by Peter.

The meeting also featured a proclamation honoring the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) on its 40th anniversary. The board recognized PAWS for its commitment to rescuing and providing sanctuaries for captive wild animals, as well as its advocacy efforts against the use of animals in entertainment. The organization, founded by the late Pat Derby and Ed Stewart, has made significant strides over the years, including the establishment of the ARC 2000 Sanctuary in San Andreas, California, which serves as a refuge for various rescued animals.

Chris Draper, the chief executive of PAWS, thanked the board and the community for their support, highlighting the organization's impact on local employment and education regarding wildlife issues. The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between the county and PAWS, emphasizing the importance of animal welfare and community engagement in Calaveras County.
