In a recent government meeting, Kent Mayor Dana Ralph proclaimed the week of September 23rd through September 29th, 2024, as National Diaper Need Awareness Week. This initiative aims to highlight the critical issue of diaper need, which affects nearly half of families in the area, according to national surveys. The proclamation emphasizes that a lack of access to clean diapers can lead to serious health risks for infants and toddlers, as well as economic instability for families.
Jack Edgerton, executive director of KidVantage, addressed the council, underscoring the emotional and financial strain that diaper need places on caregivers. He noted that when children cannot be adequately diapered, parents may miss work or school, further exacerbating their financial challenges. KidVantage has made significant strides in addressing this issue, distributing over 1.6 million diapers in 2024 alone, with plans to exceed 2.5 million by year-end. The organization has also reported a 22% increase in the number of children served compared to the previous year.
Mayor Ralph expressed pride in the community's response to diaper drives, highlighting the generosity of Kent residents who have consistently supported local diaper banks. The proclamation encourages citizens to donate to diaper banks and support organizations that help families in need, reinforcing the message that addressing diaper need is essential for the health and economic stability of families in Kent.
