The City Council has approved plans for a new bus terminal at the Clear Creek Crossing development, a move aimed at reestablishing vital bus routes in the area. The terminal will facilitate the return of routes 28, 32, and 38, which were previously cut, impacting access to local schools and the hospital.
During the meeting, city staff recommended entering into a contract with EV Studio for the design of the terminal, with a total fee of $89,980, which includes a 10% contingency for minor adjustments during the design process. The project will be funded through Urban Renewal Authority bonds.
Council members emphasized the importance of the terminal for community connectivity, particularly for students and hospital staff who rely on public transportation. The terminal will also serve as a relief station for bus drivers, addressing a critical need for operational support.
The design is expected to be completed by early spring, with construction anticipated to begin next summer. Councilor Hultein praised the city’s proactive approach in restoring bus services, highlighting the positive impact on residents' mobility and access to essential services.
The council also discussed the potential for a new bus shelter near the high school, noting that the responsibility for installation would depend on ridership levels. The city aims to ensure that any new shelters are designed to be open and welcoming, addressing past concerns about claustrophobic designs.
Overall, the initiative reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing public transportation and improving access for its residents.
