In a recent meeting of District 196, the school board celebrated the achievements of 46 seniors recognized in the National Merit Scholarship Program and the College Board's National African American and Hispanic recognition programs. These students were honored for their outstanding scores on a national standardized test taken during their junior year. The board plans to formally acknowledge these students and their families at the upcoming meeting on October 7th.

Additionally, the board reported significant progress on the new Rosemont bridal school, which is part of the May 2023 bond referendum approved by voters. The city of Rosemont has granted approval for building plans and necessary permits, paving the way for groundbreaking and construction to commence shortly. The board expressed gratitude to the Rosemont City Council and community members for their collaboration in this project, emphasizing the educational opportunities the new facility will provide.

The meeting also included a resolution to designate the week of October 7th to 11th as Principals and Assistant Principals Appreciation Week in District 196. The board acknowledged the vital roles these educators play in leading schools, guiding students, and supporting families.

During the public comment segment, Shruti Ragu, a parent of three children in the district, advocated for the inclusion of the FIRST Lego League as a district-supported extracurricular activity. She highlighted the importance of STEM education and the need for more opportunities for students to engage in such programs. Ragu emphasized that supporting an all-girls team could encourage female students' interest in STEM fields and foster essential life skills through teamwork and innovation. She called for equal access to high-quality STEM education across all elementary and middle schools in the district, expressing a willingness to collaborate with the district to make this initiative a reality.
