In a recent government meeting, Tacoma officials discussed the approval of Resolution 41532, which authorizes the city to enter into agreements with the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma for the purchase of 2.27 acres of land. The $870,000 acquisition, funded by the Public Safety Fund, is intended to facilitate the construction of a new Fire Station 7, aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities in the area.
Justin Davis from Public Works presented the current situation, noting that the existing Fire Station 7, built in 1959, is inadequate for the growing demands of the community. The station, located on South 56th and South Warner, can only accommodate one engine company, which responds to over 3,500 emergencies annually. The current site lacks space for expansion, prompting the need for relocation.
The proposed site for the new station is located near South 60th and South Tyler Streets, on undeveloped Metro Parks property that has been previously disturbed and misused. The Metro Parks board approved the sale of the property on August 26, 2023. The new location is expected to improve response times and allow for additional emergency response units, as it will be strategically positioned to serve the community more effectively.
Council members raised questions regarding the impact of the new location on emergency response and the future of the existing fire station, which is co-located with a library. Officials indicated that the current site would not be surplus and could still serve other fire department needs. The new station design will prioritize firefighter safety and include features such as separate parking areas and surveillance systems.
The meeting underscored the city's commitment to improving public safety infrastructure in anticipation of a projected population increase of 36% by 2050. The discussions highlighted the importance of community engagement in the planning process for the new station, ensuring that residents are informed and involved as the project progresses.
