During a recent government meeting, a local representative presented a heartfelt report on the successful decoration of veterans' graves in the South Summit Cemetery, highlighting the community's support and the need for continued funding. Last year, the initiative decorated 425 out of nearly 600 veterans' graves, raising approximately $4,000, significantly exceeding expectations. The representative expressed gratitude for the council's past support and outlined plans to cover all veterans' graves this year, aiming to address the 180 graves that were left undecorated.
To achieve this goal, the representative requested a total of $976 from the council, which would cover the costs of wreaths and reimburse some volunteer expenses. The breakdown included a request for $500 specifically for the decoration of graves, with the remainder allocated for ceremonial wreaths and supplies. The council responded positively, ultimately approving the funding request, which will be distributed in two checks to accommodate tax-deductible contributions.
Additionally, the representative confirmed that ceremonies will be held at each cemetery, with the Merriam Cemetery ceremony scheduled for December 14. The previous year's event featured a bugler and a roll call of veterans, which left a lasting impression on attendees. The representative emphasized the importance of community involvement and support for honoring veterans, encouraging further contributions and participation in upcoming fundraising efforts.
