In a recent Ocala City Council meeting held on October 1, 2024, the council recognized the contributions of Professor Ira Holmes, a prominent figure in the community, with a proclamation and plaque honoring his legacy. Mayor Ben Marciano highlighted Holmes' significant role in historic preservation and education, noting his involvement in over 400 board meetings and his influence as a professor at the College of Central Florida for more than six decades.
Holmes was instrumental in halting the expansion of Southeast Winona Avenue in the 1980s and played a key role in establishing the Ocala Historic Preservation Code. His dedication to the community was further acknowledged through the proposal to honor him as Chairman Emeritus of the Ocala Historic Preservation Advisory Board, a position he held for 42 years.
The meeting also included a proclamation for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, presented to Chris Romas, the director of the city's IT department, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in today's digital landscape.
The council's discussions underscored a commitment to honoring local heritage and ensuring the community's safety and technological advancement.
