In a recent city council meeting, Public Works Director Julian Skinner presented a significant budget amendment proposal amounting to $1.399 billion for the development of The Commons project. This amendment aims to enhance various components of the project, including landscaping, a children's library, and energy resiliency features.
Skinner outlined the budget breakdown into three main categories: landscaping and children's library enhancements, resiliency improvements, and additional site enhancements. Notably, the proposal includes $400,000 for landscaping that was initially omitted from the project budget, as well as plans for solar panels, battery backup systems, and increased electric vehicle charging capacity.
The council was informed that the enhancements are not final costs but rather budget estimates that will be refined as the project progresses. Skinner emphasized the importance of value assessment in the change order process, where costs will be evaluated against similar projects to ensure reasonable pricing.
Funding for the proposed enhancements will come from various sources, including a portion of the contingency allowance, ongoing fundraising efforts by The Commons Foundation, and Measure G infrastructure bond proceeds. Skinner noted that the city anticipates approximately $165,000 to $195,000 in interest from grant funds, which will also contribute to the project budget.
The council is expected to adopt the resolution for the budget amendment in the coming sessions, with discussions continuing on the specifics of the enhancements and funding allocations. The meeting highlighted the city's commitment to improving community resources while ensuring fiscal responsibility in project management.
