In a recent government meeting, city officials approved a significant upgrade to the Aviation Weather Alert System (AWAS) to enhance safety and efficiency for incoming flights. The current system, which has been in place since 2017, was deemed obsolete, prompting the city to seek a replacement. After issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP), only one bid was received from DBT Transportation, the current vendor. Following thorough discussions in committee meetings, the council unanimously voted to proceed with the upgrade, recognizing the growing air traffic and the necessity for improved weather monitoring.
Additionally, the council addressed the paving of city streets, approving a purchase order for Asphalt Pavement Systems Inc. The plan includes a revised paving schedule for fiscal years 2023-2025, with specific streets identified for immediate attention. Notably, Barber Street will undergo urgent repairs due to rapid deterioration, with work expected to commence soon. The project remains within budget, although final costs are still being finalized as additional work on swells and driveways will be addressed in a separate item.
These initiatives reflect the city’s commitment to infrastructure improvement and public safety, ensuring that both aviation operations and road conditions meet the needs of the community.
