In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the progress of a comprehensive parks project aimed at enhancing the city’s recreational spaces. The initiative, which is nearing completion, began with an extensive analysis of the conditions of all 105 parks within the citywide system. This initial phase involved collaboration with Jacks Park staff to inventory and assess the current state of the parks.
Following the assessment, the project team engaged the community through a public input process that included surveys, public meetings, and stakeholder discussions. This feedback has been instrumental in shaping ideas for the future of the parks. The project is now transitioning into the master plan phase, with upcoming meetings scheduled for October and November to further discuss findings and gather additional input from the Community Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC).
A key focus of the project is equity, ensuring that improvements not only consider the potential for new parks but also address the existing parks' accessibility and quality. The city has developed a dashboard that allows staff to access real-time data on park conditions, facilitating informed decision-making as they move toward final recommendations, including budget considerations.
Additionally, the city is participating in the Trust for Public Land's 10-Minute Walk initiative, which aims to ensure that all residents live within a short walk of a quality park. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to enhancing recreational access and equity across its park system.
