Lancaster County's Citizens Business Relations Advisory Committee (CBRAC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at revitalizing the county's business climate and demographic landscape by 2035. The initiative, which began in 2019, is a response to significant demographic shifts and workforce challenges that have emerged over the past decade.
The committee, composed of local leaders from various sectors, including business, education, and government, has identified a pressing need to address the county's aging population. Currently, 36% of Lancaster's residents are over 65, with a median age of 57.2 years, significantly higher than the state average. This demographic trend has resulted in a declining workforce, with a loss of 705 individuals aged 20 to 60 over the past ten years, alongside a decrease of 120 children in the school system.
The strategic plan outlines six key strategies to reverse these trends, with a primary focus on increasing the working-age population by 20% by 2035. The strategies include the development of workforce housing, enhancing broadband access, and fostering a dynamic school system. The committee emphasized the importance of creating a business-friendly environment that supports job creation while ensuring safe and affordable living options for residents.
Additionally, the plan highlights the need for improved communication between the Board of Supervisors and the public, as well as the revival of recreational programs to attract younger demographics. The committee plans to conduct further focus groups to gather insights from younger residents and those who have moved away, aiming to understand their needs and motivations for returning to the county.
As Lancaster County navigates these demographic challenges, the strategic plan represents a proactive approach to ensuring economic sustainability and community vitality in the years to come.
