This initiative, which has been in motion for over two years, aims to ensure that all students, families, and employees feel safe, supported, and have a sense of belonging within the school community.
Dr. McGill highlighted several key components of the plan, including the ThriveTime curriculum, which serves as a tier 1 prevention strategy, and the High School Leadership Academy, which has engaged approximately 60 to 70 students from each high school in leadership training. The emphasis on student wellness, particularly mental health, was underscored, with ongoing efforts to provide mental health screenings and support services.
A significant concern raised during the meeting was the increase in behavioral issues within schools. Dr. McGill reported a notable rise in cases requiring intervention, with 95 cases already reviewed in the first six weeks of the school year—an increase from previous years. He attributed this surge to various factors, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened societal tensions.
To address these challenges, Dr. McGill proposed the establishment of a full-time District Case Management Team (DCMT) administrator. This role would focus on overseeing investigations, providing training for school administrators, and ensuring proper support for both students and staff involved in behavioral incidents. The need for additional resources and alternative placement options for students exhibiting severe behavioral issues was also emphasized, as current facilities are nearing capacity.
In addition to behavioral supports, the meeting discussed the implementation of a telehealth pilot program in 17 high-need schools, allowing students to access healthcare services on-site. This initiative aims to reduce absenteeism and provide immediate health support to students.
The board members expressed gratitude for the comprehensive report and acknowledged the pressing need for enhanced support systems within the district. As the school year progresses, the district remains committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff.
