During a recent government meeting, the council moved forward with the approval of several economic development partner contracts aimed at fostering collaboration among local organizations to support small businesses. The committee expressed optimism about the potential for these partners to align their goals and present their strategies for working together in the future.
The meeting also included a public hearing and first reading of an ordinance proposing increases to parking rates in Columbia, South Carolina. This ordinance seeks to amend various sections of the city’s code related to motor vehicles and traffic, including regulations on parking meters, residential permit parking, and valet services.
City officials highlighted the importance of community engagement, noting that an open house had been held earlier in the day to gather public feedback on the proposed changes. The parking services director, Elle Matney, emphasized the city's commitment to transparency and education regarding the adjustments, which are based on a parking rate study conducted by WGI. This study aims to align current parking operations with recommendations from the city’s 2015 parking master plan.
The council plans to consider the parking rate changes for a second reading in November, following further discussions and community outreach efforts.
