During a recent council meeting, retired firefighter Doug Andrews voiced concerns regarding the treatment of retired firefighters in relation to proposed pension increases. Representing a group of retired firefighters, Andrews highlighted the disparity between current duty crew firefighters and retirees, emphasizing that while the duty crew is set to receive a lump sum increase, the 100 retired members, particularly the 71 eligible for an increase, are being overlooked.
Andrews, who served on the fire department for 20 years, expressed frustration that the council's proposal rewards only two of the four groups within the relief association, effectively sidelining retirees. He argued that all members should be treated equitably, advocating for a 20% increase for retirees to align with the proposed adjustments for active firefighters.
The retired firefighters have been vocal about their concerns, with Andrews noting that the council has received around 300 emails from retired members expressing their sentiments. He underscored the historical context of their service, which was predominantly voluntary, and called for the council to honor the unwritten agreement that retirees would be included in any increases.
Andrews concluded his remarks by urging the council to reconsider their proposal and work collaboratively with the retired firefighters to ensure fair treatment for all members of the association.
