A new recreational project is set to enhance community engagement and accessibility at a local sports facility, featuring an octagon-shaped shelter with picnic tables and multiple sports courts, including bocce and shuffleboard. The initiative aims to provide a welcoming space for both spectators and participants, with plans for benches and two ADA-compliant parking spaces to ensure universal access.
The project will slightly modify the existing parking lot to improve accessibility and accommodate the new use area, resulting in a net gain of one parking space despite the loss of one due to the adjustments. Additionally, stormwater management improvements are planned to effectively handle runoff from the parking area, while five new shade trees will be planted to enhance the environment.
The facility is designed primarily for casual play, encouraging community members to engage in friendly games with family and friends rather than competitive league play. Historical data suggests that similar facilities in the region have seen significant usage, indicating a strong demand for such recreational amenities.
The Recreation and Beautification Committee is also exploring options for secure storage of shuffleboard equipment, recognizing that not all residents may own the necessary gear. A potential solution includes installing lockers near the new shelter to protect the equipment from the elements.
This project not only aims to revitalize the area following the demolition of a damaged shelter but also seeks to fill a gap in local recreational offerings, particularly for activities that have been overlooked in recent years. The community is encouraged to participate in the upcoming discussions as the project moves forward.
