The Rockville County Board of Education convened for a work session on Monday evening, beginning with a moment of silence to honor Lorenzo Holland, a long-time employee who recently passed away. Dr. Oates, the superintendent, expressed condolences to Holland's family and friends, acknowledging his 35 years of service in the district.
Chairwoman Brown also extended sympathies to the families affected by a recent tragedy at Apalachee High School, urging the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
Following the moments of remembrance, the board approved the meeting agenda unanimously. The session then opened to public comments, allowing community members to address the board for three minutes each.
Among the speakers was Jayla Brown, a student from Heritage High School and Rockland Career Academy, who presented on a community initiative organized by the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA). She highlighted a supply drive aimed at raising awareness for sickle cell disease, seeking donations of various items to support children receiving treatment at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Sickle Cell Clinic. Brown emphasized the importance of community involvement in improving the lives of those affected by the condition.
The meeting underscored the board's commitment to community engagement and support for both staff and students during challenging times.
