In a recent government meeting, representatives from Glenwood, Willowbrook, and Robertsville schools shared a series of positive updates highlighting community engagement and student achievements.
Glenwood PTO celebrated a successful fundraiser that exceeded its goals, culminating in a fun event where students pied their principals. Additionally, First Student Transportation partnered with the school to conduct bus safety training, ensuring students are well-versed in safety procedures for daily commutes and field trips. The school’s vegetable garden is also thriving, providing fresh produce to students and teachers, thanks to a grant from the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation and the hard work of the school community.
Willowbrook's first and second graders enjoyed a trip to the Oak Ridge Playhouse to watch \"The Velveteen Rabbit,\" where they exhibited commendable behavior. The Robear Ticks team visited Ripley's Aquarium, collaborating with families to explore the use of AI in enhancing oceanic ecosystems and learning about biomimicry engineering from aquarium staff. Recognition was also given to Miss Cochran, the art teacher at Willowbrook, who was named WBIR Educator of the Week for her dedication to her students.
From Robertsville, it was reported that Oak Ridge Schools successfully sent nine middle school ambassadors to Nakashi, Japan, marking the first exchange since 2019 due to COVID-19. The exchange was celebrated by Mr. Sean Seifert, an art teacher and co-chairman of the sister city support organization, who expressed gratitude to all involved.
Lastly, Oak Ridge High School junior Hayden Sawyer received the best in show medal at the Tennessee Valley Fair for her sculpture \"Iphigenia,\" along with a $1,000 scholarship. Six other students were also recognized for their artistic achievements, and the school proudly announced its National Merit semifinalists: Bennett Zinn, Silas Rowden, and William Shinn.
These updates reflect a vibrant school community committed to education, creativity, and international collaboration.
