The San Juan County Commission convened recently, beginning with a prayer led by Commissioner Lanier, who called for protection and support for citizens, first responders, and those affected by recent hurricanes on the East Coast. Following the invocation, the commission proceeded to a significant presentation recognizing Fire Lieutenant Ryan Varnell for his completion of the National Fire Academy's Managing Officer Program.
Chief Bega highlighted Lieutenant Varnell's dedication to professional development, noting that the program equips emergency service leaders with essential skills in change management, risk reduction, and leadership. Varnell's capstone project focused on improving firefighter mental health through peer support, aiming to address the psychological challenges faced by first responders.
Lieutenant Varnell, stationed at the Bloomfield fire station, expressed gratitude for the recognition and the educational opportunity he received. The meeting underscored the importance of professional training in enhancing the capabilities of local emergency services, with Varnell being one of only a few graduates of the program in New Mexico. The commission celebrated this achievement, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the community and the fire department.
