In a recent city council meeting, officials unanimously approved a rezoning petition that will allow Rubber Mill Inc., a gasket manufacturing company, to expand its operations. The council voted to rezone properties located at 3109 15th Avenue Boulevard Southeast from regional commercial to industrial, a move deemed necessary for the business's growth. Planning Manager Cal Overby explained that the current zoning limits industrial uses to a maximum of 50,000 square feet, which has hindered Rubber Mill's ability to expand.
The area surrounding the site has seen significant industrial development, and the council acknowledged that the rezoning aligns better with the current land use and transportation plans. Despite the existing regional commercial designation, which permits some industrial activities, the council recognized that the industrial zoning would better accommodate the needs of local businesses.
During the meeting, the council also addressed ongoing concerns regarding the Hickory Public Housing Authority. City Manager Warren Wood reported on the complexities surrounding the potential transfer of the housing authority's responsibilities to the Western Piedmont Council of Governments. He highlighted the need for further investigation into financial liabilities that could arise from such a transfer, particularly regarding the executive director's severance package, which could amount to approximately $290,000.
The council decided to postpone any decisions regarding the housing authority until they could gather more information, reflecting the community's frustrations over the authority's performance and transparency issues. Council members expressed their commitment to ensuring that public housing resources are utilized effectively and that the community's needs are met.
Additionally, the meeting concluded with a positive note as council members celebrated the success of the recent Oktoberfest, which attracted an estimated 50,000 attendees. They commended city staff for their efforts in managing the event and restoring the area afterward. The council's next meeting will continue discussions on the housing authority and other community matters.
