During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing issues surrounding the Pleasant Grove Parks bridge, which was deemed unsafe in January 2024. Following this assessment, the bridge was closed to the public, prompting concerns from the community.
In an effort to address the safety concerns, an engineering evaluation was conducted, revealing that repairs would cost approximately $150,000 to meet engineering standards similar to those of other pedestrian bridges in the area. However, a more cost-effective solution was pursued, leading to a temporary fix that involved repositioning the bridge and replacing its boards for just over $1,000.
Unfortunately, after only two weeks of reopening, the bridge was once again closed due to severe flooding from the Rivanna River, which reached its highest level since 2010, cresting at about 23.5 feet. The floodwaters pushed the bridge back from its original position, raising questions about the structural integrity and future repairs needed.
Officials acknowledged the challenges of anchoring the bridge securely, noting that the logistics of accessing the site with heavy equipment complicate potential solutions. As a result, the bridge will remain closed while further assessments and planning for a more robust solution are undertaken. The community has been informed of the situation, and officials expressed their apologies for the inconvenience.
