In a recent government meeting, officials reviewed the outcomes of two major events held in the area, highlighting both successes and challenges faced during the planning and execution phases.
The first event, centered around Lake Monona, attracted over 2,000 participants and an estimated 35,100 spectators. Feedback from surveys indicated that between 100 and 150 hotel room nights were booked, with Hotel Avid being a popular choice among attendees. The event successfully drew participants from 22 states and four countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Antigua. Organizers expressed gratitude for the city's support, noting that local charities benefited from over $35,100 raised through participant donations.
In contrast, the second event, which had previously seen success in 2016, struggled to meet expectations in 2023. Despite attracting participants from 20 states, the event fell short of its target attendance, drawing only 500 participants instead of the needed 750. Organizers reported a significant financial loss and indicated that they are unlikely to host the event again in its current format. They speculated that the timing of the event, scheduled for the second weekend of June, may not align with the preferences of endurance triathletes.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to reassess the future of the less successful event, with potential adjustments to its timing being considered. Organizers expressed optimism about continuing to engage with the community and improve future events.
