In a recent meeting of the Flint Board of Education, significant actions were taken regarding board member Melanie Relleford, who was censured for violating board policy. This decision follows a thorough investigation prompted by multiple complaints against board member Rutherford, who was accused of spreading false and defamatory rumors about district employees, thereby creating a toxic work environment.
The investigation, conducted by an independent law firm, substantiated all three complaints filed by long-time district employees, including a senior administrator and a building principal. The findings indicated that Rutherford's actions violated several board policies, including those related to workplace safety, anti-harassment, and ethics.
In addition to the censure, the board voted to suspend funding for Rutherford's attendance at out-of-state conferences at district expense. Notably, Rutherford was the sole board member to oppose the resolution. The board aims to restore confidence in its governance and support the district's leadership and staff, emphasizing its commitment to providing quality education for students in the Flint Community School.
The investigation report will be made available to the public, pending consent from the complainants, as part of the board's efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
