During a recent government meeting, key updates were shared regarding teaching, learning, and equity initiatives within Evergreen Public Schools. The discussion highlighted four main topics aimed at enhancing student success and engagement.
The meeting began with an overview of the Teaching, Learning, and Equity (TLE) team, which includes senior directors who are actively visiting schools to build relationships with school leaders and provide necessary support. Bobby Hite, Alex Sheehy, and Griffin Peyton are leading efforts across 38 schools, emphasizing the importance of hands-on experiences in fostering student and staff success.
A significant focus was placed on student services, led by Cale Piland and Jason Castro, which encompasses various aspects such as discipline, attendance, and athletics. The importance of school attendance was underscored, with the athletics program highlighted as a key factor in improving student engagement. Notably, the Heritage Timber Wolves football team celebrated a historic victory, ending a 20-game losing streak, which was seen as a morale booster for the community.
The meeting also showcased the College, Career, and Technical Education (CCTE) program, which recently hosted an orientation for 110 students from local high schools. This program aims to equip students with essential skills for future careers, and the district reported the highest enrollment in CCTE courses in Washington state, with over 2,100 students participating.
Lastly, the meeting addressed ongoing efforts to promote equity, inclusion, and belonging within the school environment. The district is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Jamila Singleton, has prepared resources for staff to engage students in meaningful discussions about their identities and cultures.
The meeting concluded with an invitation for further questions, reflecting the district's commitment to transparency and community involvement in educational initiatives.
