In a recent meeting, the Cumberland Valley School District celebrated the impressive achievements of its track and field teams, highlighting standout performances from both boys and girls varsity athletes.
Colin, a newcomer to the 400-meter race, made a remarkable debut by running under 60 seconds and later improved his long jump to 17 feet, qualifying for outdoor nationals in Philadelphia. At the nationals, he finished 28th overall with a personal record of 178.25 inches.
The girls' varsity team, led by Anna Bonardi, concluded their season with a 5-4 record in dual meets and secured a fifth-place finish in the 8016 100 at districts. Bonardi also excelled in the 3,200-meter run, placing sixth, and played a crucial role in the 4x800 meter relay team that earned a silver medal at districts. The team set a new DMR record at the prestigious Penn Relays and later achieved a seventh-place finish at the state meet, bringing home a new state record of 9:21.22.
The boys' varsity team had a standout season, beginning with a thrilling dual meet against State College that came down to the final race. They triumphed over rival Chambersburg, the defending state champions, in a closely contested meet, ultimately claiming the division title for the Commonwealth. The team continued its success at the district meet, where they secured first place in both the 4x800 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay, contributing to their overall district title victory.
The boys' team set a program record with 20 qualifiers for the state meet and tied a record with seven medalists. Collectively, the boys and girls teams achieved a combined total of 11 state medalists, setting new relay records in the process.
The meeting concluded with recognition of board members for their service, including Mr. Clash, who was honored for ten years of dedication to the school board. The district expressed gratitude to all athletes and wished them success in their upcoming sports seasons.
