City Council Approves Controversial Oak Ridge Villas Development

During a recent government meeting, community concerns regarding property taxes and affordable housing were raised, highlighting the impact of tax increases in Rochester. Casey McGregor, a local resident, questioned how the rising taxes from the city, school board, and county affect residents' ability to afford housing and pay mortgages. The public hearing on this matter will remain open until November 4, allowing further community input.

The meeting also addressed the final plat for Oak Ridge Villas, a proposed subdivision consisting of six single-family residential lots. Elliot Mueller from Rochester Community Development presented the request, noting that the project had previously received approval for its major land subdivision. The development aims to provide more workforce housing options in the area.

Concerns about stormwater management were discussed, with the developer confirming the installation of an underground storage facility designed to mitigate flooding issues. This solution was reached in collaboration with the city's Public Works department.

A contentious point arose regarding a proposed condition for a screening fence between the new development and neighboring properties. While some council members expressed trust in the developer's commitment to build the fence voluntarily, others argued for the necessity of formalizing this requirement to ensure community protection. Ultimately, the council voted to include the fence condition in the approval, with a majority supporting the amendment.
