During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding stormwater runoff and traffic issues related to a proposed development project. An ecological expert highlighted the potential for increased runoff due to the extensive asphalt coverage planned for the site, which spans 15 acres. The expert expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the proposed runoff reduction measures, noting that natural ground absorption would be significantly compromised.
The discussion emphasized the implications of increased runoff on local waterways, particularly Wells Brook, which flows under Long Hill Crossroad and through areas near Honeysail and the BrightView Senior Living Facility. The expert warned that flooding in these areas, especially along Beard Sawmill Road—a heavily trafficked route—could worsen with the new development.
Traffic concerns were also a focal point of the meeting. A review of a submitted traffic report indicated that the level of service at the Old Stratford Road and Route 8 northbound ramp would degrade from a grade of C to D, exacerbating existing congestion. The expert noted that traffic often backs up to the point where eastbound vehicles cannot turn into Farm Elk Crossing, indicating a pressing need for further assessment of the traffic impacts.
Additionally, questions were raised about the property owner's decision to clear much of the land before submitting the application, leading to calls for a reevaluation of the zoning designation. The expert suggested that light industrial zoning might be more beneficial for the community, advocating for a focus on attracting manufacturing to the area.
