During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around community services and the successful recertification of Nala, a therapy dog that has been instrumental in providing support to local residents. Nala has completed her recertification with outstanding results, allowing her to continue her weekly visits, which have already reached 65 for the year. This initiative began a year and a half ago, and the therapy dog now visits at least one person almost every week.
In response to inquiries from trustees, it was revealed that out of 328 clients served, 237 are active users of the services, with only 5% residing outside the township boundaries. The majority of clients are township residents, indicating a strong local engagement with the services provided.
Additionally, the meeting addressed staffing challenges faced by North Riverside's senior bus transportation, which has led to an influx of new clients being referred to the township's services. The speaker highlighted efforts to raise awareness about available services by attending a local block captain meeting, further contributing to the increase in client numbers.
The meeting concluded with a motion to approve a grant of $14,000 for PeopleCare, aimed at supporting senior services in the absence of bus transportation. This funding request, while higher than usual, underscores the urgent need for enhanced support for the senior community.
